Something to think and pray about this week
The fifth chapter of Mark’s Gospel describes two healings by Jesus: the healing of a girl dying after twelve years of life and the healing of a woman sick for twelve years. In both there is physical contact with Jesus. The woman reaches out through the crowd to touch him. Jesus takes the little girl by the hand. This bleeding woman is the patron saint of medical patients: she had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. A point comes in our sickness when we realise that medicine alone will make no difference. We turn to the Lord and find help, maybe not in a cure, but in peace. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Lord, I cannot touch you, but I reach out to you in faith. You said of the little girl, ‘She is not dead but sleeping.’ And you woke her up. I am waiting for your hand on me, to make me more fully alive. Let me hear you say to me, ‘Talitha cumi.’

Leaving an Emotional Legacy

The most fundamental emotional need of children is the need to feel loved. Other significant emotional needs are the need for security or safety, the need for self-worth or significance, the need to belong or be accepted, the need for productivity or accomplishment. When these needs are met children grow up to be healthy adults.
When these needs are not met, children grow up with many internal struggles which often follow them for decades.
Each of us is leaving our children an emotional legacy. The legacy we leave depends largely on how we meet the emotional needs of our children.

Beautiful music for soul

God wants to heal us and restore us, not just forgive us. He wants to make us into a people set apart for him. And for that to happen, we need to look at the “inside” as well as the “outside” of our lives

A key to success

Too often, we place excess importance on potential problems. We all have a certain amount of energy so let’s apply it to creating extraordinary relationships, advancing our careers and meeting our goals INSTEAD of wasting that energy worrying. Take action on what you have control over and minimize risks for what you don’t. Then invest your energy wisely

Father Solanus

The life of Capuchin Franciscan Fr. Solanus Casey is a model of humble faith and service. Through a new video documentary, The Healing Prophet: Solanus Casey Catholic families can learn more about this special man who was declared a "Venerable" by Pope John Paul II on July 11, 1995. I had an opportunity recently to view the 59 minute documentary produced by GL Productions and found it both inspirational and informative.

The documentary opens with a retrospective look at the life of Fr. Solanus, born Bernard Francis Casey on November 25, 1870, including a look at his immigrant parents and Catholic upbringing. From early adulthood, Fr. Casey sought to dedicate his life to the service of others. The documentary details his vocational path and welcoming ministry. For over forty years, Fr. Casey met with and helped people in a remarkably accessible fashion. He was called a "people's priest", and was known for his counseling and healing. Some of the highlights of The Healing Prophet: Solanus Casey are the firsthand accounts from people who requested and benefited from Fr. Casey's prayerful intercession. The film recounts Fr. Solanus Casey's gift of prophecy and his encouragement that people come to a complete confidence in and accepting of God's will, regardless of the outcome of their situation. Lovely footage of the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit, a pilgrimage destination, will leave the viewer with a desire to visit this special place of devotion. Viewing firsthand the details of the extraordinary life of the simple man left me wanting to know more about Fr. Solanus Casey and his case for canonization.

I am pleased to share the following conversation with filmmaker Audrey Geyer, who shares her comments on the making of The Healing Prophet: Solanus Casey.

Have hope!

Only when the future is certain as a positive reality does it become possible to live the present as well. So now we can say: Christianity was not only “good news”—the communication of a hitherto unknown content. In our language we would say: the Christian message was not only “informative” but “performative”. That means: the Gospel is not merely a communication of things that can be known—it is one that makes things happen and is life-changing. The dark door of time, of the future, has been thrown open. The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life.

44. To protest against God in the name of justice is not helpful. A world without God is a world without hope (cf. Eph 2:12). Only God can create justice. And faith gives us the certainty that he does so. The image of the Last Judgement is not primarily an image of terror, but an image of hope; for us it may even be the decisive image of hope. Is it not also a frightening image? I would say: it is an image that evokes responsibility, an image, therefore, of that fear of which Saint Hilary spoke when he said that all our fear has its place in love[35]. God is justice and creates justice. This is our consolation and our hope. And in his justice there is also grace. This we know by turning our gaze to the crucified and risen Christ. Both these things—justice and grace—must be seen in their correct inner relationship. Grace does not cancel out justice. It does not make wrong into right. It is not a sponge which wipes everything away, so that whatever someone has done on earth ends up being of equal value.

Human life is a journey. Towards what destination? How do we find the way? Life is like a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route. The true stars of our life are the people who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope. Certainly, Jesus Christ is the true light, the sun that has risen above all the shadows of history. But to reach him we also need lights close by—people who shine with his light and so guide us along our way. Who more than Mary could be a star of hope for us? With her “yes” she opened the door of our world to God himself; she became the living Ark of the Covenant, in whom God took flesh, became one of us, and pitched his tent among us (cf. Jn 1:14).

So we cry to her: Holy Mary, you belonged to the humble and great souls of Israel who, like Simeon, were “looking for the consolation of Israel” (Lk 2:25) and hoping, like Anna, “for the redemption of Jerusalem” (Lk 2:38).

How many times had the Lord, your Son, said the same thing to his disciples: do not be afraid! In your heart, you heard this word again during the night of Golgotha. Before the hour of his betrayal he had said to his disciples: “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (Jn 14:27). “Do not be afraid, Mary!” In that hour at Nazareth the angel had also said to you: “Of his kingdom there will be no end” (Lk 1:33). Could it have ended before it began? No, at the foot of the Cross, on the strength of Jesus's own word, you became the mother of believers.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, our Mother, teach us to believe, to hope, to love with you. Show us the way to his Kingdom! Star of the Sea, shine upon us and guide us on our way!

JUST PUSH

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might.

Each night the man returned to his cabin sore, and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Seeing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, the Adversary decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man's weary mind: "You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn't budged. Why kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it." Thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure, these thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man.

"Why kill myself over this?" he thought. "I'll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort and that will be good enough." And that is what he planned to do until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord. "Lord" he said, "I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? why am I failing?"

The Lord responded compassionately, "My child, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinew and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven't moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. I, my friend, will now move the rock."

At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just simple obedience and faith in Him. By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves the mountains.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes... Romans 1:16

What I found was that these women were not only confronted with the "legal issues" associated with separation and divorce, but they also had to deal with the emotional and psychological aspects involved. I decided that it was about time someone showed women how to "win" the emotional and psychological battle associated with martial breakdown - believe it or not:

The battle is more with YOURSELF than with the other party!

In order to be the victor of this "battle", many women need to change their own perceptions and expectations about themselves. We are what we perceive ourselves to be. If you always see yourself as a "victim", then chances are you will be! If you don't expect a lot of yourself or the people around you, then chances are you will continue to be "let down" and feel like a "victim.

Learn how to Change your Perceptions and Expectations.

Whenever you are faced with adversity, one of the "keys" to winning is to feel confident, liberated and good about yourself. I know that this is easier than it sounds. Issues such as anger, betrayal, domestic violence, lack of financial independence, low self esteem, anxiety, depression and fear of the unknown can all contribute to a feeling of "no confidence"! However, most of these factors involve emotional traps that we simply aren't aware of.

Another important element is knowledge. Yes, if you or your spouse want to separate or you even think this is a possibility, then you do need to know what your legal rights are and preferably before separation takes place! More important than this is being aware of the practical implications of the decisions you make - they may come back and bite you otherwise!

Know your Rights BEFORE you Separate
